Samsung's folding phone is REAL
Samsung's folding phone is REAL - and experts believe it'll be called the Samsung Galaxy X
Samsung has been heavily rumoured to be working on a FOLDING smartphone - and now reports are emerging that a prototype has been built.
Multiple tech outlets are suggesting Samsung has been privately showing off the device at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Furthermore, they reckon the official name will be the Samsung Galaxy X. Could this be a pointed swipe at arch-rival Apple and its iPhone X ?
According to local reports, Samsung not only shared a glimpse of the phone but also a suggested launch timetable for it.
“Samsung Display said it has developed a 7.3-inch foldable panel with plans to start production later this year,” an industry source told The Korean Herald on condition of anonymity.
The news comes after Lets Go Digital uncovered a series of sketches submitted by Samsung to the Korean Intellectual Property Office under the same model number in 2017.
The sketches suggest that the Galaxy X will have a flip-phone design with two displays - one of which will be flexible - and a multi-joint hinge, similar to the one on Microsoft's Surface Book .
Koh Dong-jin, president of Samsung's mobile business, has also hinted the company would launch a smartphone with a bendable display in 2018.
However, he admitted at the time that there were several hurdles that needed to be overcome before the device could go into production.
"As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year," he said during a media day for the launch of the Galaxy Note 8 in August.
"When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product."
